CLWB A.I. Takes Off

CLWB has introduced two new products to our portfolio – A.I. learning packages for school children, ‘How to Make a Mind’; and introductory A.I. training for adults, ‘A.I. Demystified’. AIwordpressproductsOur A.I. initiative kicks off on Friday 29th September with CLWB Asia partner Ian Myles delivering a keynote on A.I. at the Maths Association of Western Australia STEM conference in Perth.


‘How to Make a Mind’ will feature as part of the BBC’s Digital Cities week in Bristol, on 17th October, where we run a workshop to start the process of preparing children for an A.I. – infused world. This workshop will be filmed for BBC School Report.


On 21st October, we are delivering both ‘How to Make a Mind‘ and ‘A.I. Demystified‘ – our adult program – at the Bath Digital Festival.


A.I. Demystified continues in Bristol on October 26th, and is next delivered in Singapore on 17th November as part of the ID/AI Fintech conference.


From there, we take it across Australia, finishing beginning of December – more on this to follow.

With A.I Virtual Machines and classroom activity packs, and interest from the USA and other parts of the world, A.I. is here to stay as a key pillar in the CLWB portfolio.

STEM Videos for China

CLWB is delighted to announce the publication of STEM ‘Master Class’ videos for Pearson China.

Working to Pearson’s Project STEM template, CLWB created 5.5 hours worth of instructional material which is sold with Pearson’s Project STEM books in China.

CLWB worked with Park House School, and Kintbury St Mary’s CE Primary School, Berkshire, UK to create the videos.


The videos are being used to train teachers in China how to teach Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) using Project Based Learning methods. Each demonstration covered STEM theory followed by a design & make tasks designed to develop 21st Century Skills such as how to think critically, solve problems, work in teams, and make presentations.

STEAM and Coding Australian Workshops

CLWB is delighted to announce the successful delivery of 16 workshops across Australia with partners Intuyu and GEM. In total we delivered workshops to 252 people – principals, teachers and students – across the country, starting in Brisbane and finishing in Perth.

The Australian National Innovation and Science Agenda set the challenge to all educators to prepare their students for the rapidly changing world of work, and increase focus on Coding, STEM and Digital Technologies. CLWBs’ ‘You Can Teach Coding’ and ‘Practical Steps to STEAM’ workshops helped schools meet this challenge.

Following the endorsement of the new Australian Technologies Curriculum, states are now beginning to make coding and robotics, compulsory in schools from Prep to Year 10. “Practical Steps to STEAM” enables schools understand how to plan a STEAM/STEM strategy; teach the required “General Purpose Computer Languages” to students; and manage the implementation of STEAM or STEM in their schools. The workshop included hands-on experience in a STEAM project and Coding.

“You Can Teach Coding” taught teachers how to code and how to teach coding. Participants were taken from assumed no-knowledge to being confident in teaching with a “General Purpose Programming Language”. Carefully scaffolded exercises took delegates from Scratch to HTML to Python in just one day.

A highlight was a two-day e-fashion workshop at Box Hill Institute, Victoria. Here students designed imaginative fashion solutions using sensors.

CLWB at World Skills 2015

St Nicholas World Skills Guilherme

CLWB was proud to present the fantastic work done at St Nicholas School at one of the biggest education events in the world – World Skills 2015.

With an attendance of 200,000 people, and a 212,000 m2 site, World Skills is an extreme demonstration of applied learning. This bi-annual competition enables students under the age of 23 to compete on the world stage on the basis of their demonstrated abilities. The range of skills covered is vast – from aircraft engineering to software, to beauty therapy.


CLWB was delighted to be invited by the UK Department of Trade and Industry to present on their stand. The presentation featured children and staff from St Nicholas who showed the work they developed using the CLWB curriculum and learning kits.

St Nicholas HeadTeacher, Nick Thody, said “we’re in the 21st Century right now, and the skills that will be needed are certainly not those that we teach at the moment. I’m keen for children to learn the things that technology won’t be able to take away from them. Children need to learn how to make”.

Head of IT, Darren Burchall introduced the staff, students and their work. Darren explained how “the children take what they learn in the CLWB sessions to Science and Mathematics”.

Darren also told the story of Roberto Alves de Almeida who until recently was a security guard at the school. Roberto was given the opportunity to join the IT team as trainee, and started a part-time university course. As a result of his engagement in the CLWB project he changed his degree subject to fit the CLWB approach, and is now an in-demand teacher at the school.

The first demo was from Beni and Eduardo, Year 7. They invented an “explanation machine” using wand-activated voice explanations of key concepts such as recycling, DIY and consumerism. The students combined 3 key technologies – Raspberry Pi, Makey Makey and 3d printing into a superb example of ‘Invention-based Learning”.

Matheus (Year 8), talked about how he never misses a single lesson because he enjoys it so much, and why its so important to learn skills such as programming and making products – “We are in a technological revolution. Every day something new is going to appear. Through robotics we develop skills that we wouldn’t learn elsewhere – groupwork, creativity, innovation, and most importantly problem solving. We can fail 50 times – it doesn’t matter, we work as a team to fix the problems and make a great product. I think we should have programming as an actual subject in schools”.
